Industrial Growth
Industrial production in August rose 8 percent compared to the same month last year, driven by strong manufacturing output which increased by 9 percent. A favourable base effect also helped push up overall growth numbers. Rajani Sinha, Chief Economist at CareEdge Ratings, noted that the strong industrial performance aligns with other positive economic data such as GDP growth, lending, and exports.
Consumer Sectors
While production of durable goods rose 11.1 percent in August following a 12 percent increase in July, non-durable goods saw a growth of only 2.1 percent. Analysts note that consumer non-durables have remained sluggish, with output up only 1.2 percent in the April to August period. At the same time, Indians are increasingly relying on loans to make purchases, with Reserve Bank of India data showing bank personal loans up 16.2 percent at the end of July and non-bank personal loans up 21.4 percent.
Sector Breakdown
Within manufacturing, 18 of the 23 categories posted higher year-on-year growth in August. Electrical equipment and motor vehicles recorded strong growth of 30.9 percent and 25.2 percent respectively. Meanwhile, mining and quarrying output slumped 9.2 percent month-on-month due to monsoon rains, and electricity and gas supply rose 12.3 percent year-on-year.
Context
The Index of Industrial Production measures the short-term changes in output across different sectors of the Indian economy. Understanding these monthly trends helps economists gauge overall demand and consumer health ahead of critical periods like the festival season.
