Ben Wheatley has been hired to direct the horror film 'Molepeople' after original director Rob Savage left the project over scheduling conflicts. The movie is a joint venture between Paramount Primal and Blumhouse Atomic Monster and is slated for a worldwide theatrical release on August 27, 2027. The film, first announced at Blumhouse Atomic Monster’s New York Comic‑Con panel earlier this month, follows a man who explores abandoned tunnels beneath New York City and discovers a twisted underground society. The screenplay was written by Nathan Elston. LaKeith Stanfield, who had been attached as the lead, also exited following Savage’s departure. Savage will stay on as an executive producer together with Ryan Turek, Tracy Rosenblum and Elston. Production is co‑financed and co‑produced by Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Paramount Primal, with Paramount handling global distribution. The producing team includes Blumhouse chief Jason Blum, Paramount Primal heads J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, and producer James Harris. Wheatley, known for films such as 'Down Terrace', 'Kill List' and the recent thriller 'Normal' starring Bob Odenkirk, brings a reputation for bold storytelling. His previous work spans indie titles like 'High‑Rise' and studio projects such as 'Meg 2: The Trench'. Representation for Wheatley comes from WME, Independent Talent Group and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.

Context

The shift in directors reflects the fluid nature of film scheduling, especially for high‑budget horror projects that involve multiple studios. Changing a lead actor and director before filming is not uncommon in the industry.
