Severe cyclonic storm Arnab brought heavy rain and strong winds to Visakhapatnam, leaving behind widespread destruction and prompting election candidates to pause heavy campaigning for civic body polls and focus instead on relief and restoration efforts. ## Relief Efforts Candidates from both the ruling alliance and opposition groups traded their busy election schedules starting Tuesday evening to visit battered neighbourhoods, working alongside civic workers and Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation staff to clear blocked drains, clear out fallen trees, and fix waterlogging problems, while also working alongside the Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited to bring back electricity. NDA mayoral candidate Mukka Sravani helped out in Akkayyapalem to deal with fallen electric poles and uprooted trees, while YSRCP Assembly constituency coordinator Botcha Anusha, who is the daughter of YSRCP MLC Botcha Satyanarayana, visited low-lying areas and hillock neighbourhoods in Bheemunipatnam to distribute relief items. In China Waltair, TDP and YSRCP candidates and their teams spent Tuesday night clearing debris and blocked roads, and YSRCP corporator candidates in One Town worked on clearing fallen power poles, restoring drinking water, and checking on evacuated residents at relief camps. Former Jana Sena Party GVMC floor leader B. Vasantha Lakshmi also organized relief work across multiple colonies and urged locals to reach out during emergencies. ## Campaign Persistence Even with the harsh weather, election campaigning still went ahead in some areas, with loudspeaker-equipped vehicles making announcements and candidates from the BJP, YSRCP, TDP, and JSP going door-to-door through the rain. YSRCP mayoral candidate Varudu Kalyani campaigned with corporator candidates in the Anakapalli zone and attended a party meeting, while TDP MLA P.G.V.R. Naidu ran a door-to-door campaign alongside West Assembly corporator candidates ahead of the scheduled November 1 polls. ## Context Local body elections in India often see political candidates step up community service during natural disasters to build direct connections with voters. Cyclones regularly disrupt civic life along the eastern coast of Andhra Pradesh, requiring swift coordination between municipal authorities and local political machinery to handle emergency response.
