Naam Tamilar Katchi office-bearer A. Duraimurugan, known as 'Saattai' Duraimurugan, has moved the Madras High Court to seek anticipatory bail following an FIR registered against him by the Chennai cyber crime wing.
The Case
The police case stems from a complaint filed on October 3, 2026, by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam cadre A. Christopher, a fisherman from Tondiarpet in Chennai, regarding a YouTube video uploaded on September 30, 2026. The complainant stated that the YouTuber made derogatory remarks against Minister for Public Works and Sports Development Aadhav Arjuna after the Minister addressed the NTK member as his younger brother. The complaint also alleged that Duraimurugan made unsubstantiated claims accusing the government of doing nothing during its 143-day honeymoon period since taking power.
The Defense
Duraimurugan termed the allegations false and politically motivated, arguing that the FIR aims to curb freedom of speech and democratic dissent. He maintained that his video contained only decent political criticism in the public interest and accused the complainant of lacking locus standi. Furthermore, he stated that custodial interrogation is unnecessary since he has already taken part in a police inquiry and remains willing to cooperate with future investigations.
Context
Anticipatory bail is a legal provision allowing a person to seek release on bail in the event of arrest for a non-bailable offence, subject to court conditions. Cyber crime wings in police departments handle complaints related to online content, social media posts, and digital defamation under relevant legal statutes.
