Madhubala and Dilip Kumar's classic romance ended due to professional clashes rather than the actress's later health struggles, according to Madhubala's sister, Madhur Bhushan.
The Breakup
Madhur Bhushan recently refuted claims made by veteran actress Mumtaz that Dilip Kumar left Madhubala after learning about her heart condition and inability to conceive. Madhur clarified that the heart problem was diagnosed much later in life when Dilip Kumar was no longer in the picture. The real split between Madhubala and Dilip Kumar happened in 1957 during the making of Mughal-E-Azam. Their relationship suffered because of growing differences between Dilip Kumar and Madhubala's father, Ataullah Khan. In his autobiography, Dilip Kumar noted that Ataullah Khan wanted to start a film studio featuring both actors, a business proposal the actor felt uncomfortable with. By the time they filmed Mughal-E-Azam, the former couple had stopped talking to each other.
Health Battle
Madhubala first showed signs of serious illness when she fainted and vomited blood while shooting for Bahut Din Huwe. She later learned she had a hole in her heart after traveling to Mumbai for medical tests. Because local medical technology was not advanced enough, Kishore Kumar, who was then in a relationship with her, took her to London for a consultation. London doctors confirmed she had a hole in her heart and gave her two years to live, with no available cure. Despite this, Madhubala initially refused to believe the diagnosis and continued working, eventually fainting on the set of Mughal-E-Azam while wearing heavy chains. Her health worsened steadily, leaving her bedridden before the age of thirty. Madhubala passed away in 1969 at the age of 36, after losing her speech four months prior. Notably, Madhubala and Dilip Kumar are buried just five to 10 metres apart at Mumbai's Juhu Muslim Kabrastan.
Marriage and Final Years
After marrying Kishore Kumar, Madhubala faced a difficult home life during her illness. Madhur stated that Kishore Kumar visited her only once every three months while they lived on different floors of the same Bandra house. When Madhubala neared her final moments, her father called Kishore Kumar, who initially hesitated due to booked tickets for an outdoor shoot before finally visiting. Although she married Kishore Kumar, Madhur maintained that her sister could never truly forget her first love, Dilip Kumar.
Context
Classic Bollywood romances and family dynamics from the golden era of Indian cinema often face public speculation decades later. Interviews and autobiographies by family members and co-stars frequently offer new perspectives on historical controversies. Medical limitations in mid-century India also meant that congenital heart conditions like ventricular septal defects were significantly harder to treat than they are today.
