Tamil Nadu Prisons DGP Sandeep Rai Rathore has been transferred out of his post following a jailbreak in Theni district. He has been posted as DGP, EB, Vigilance, Chennai. K. Shankar, who was ADGP, Enforcement Bureau CID, has replaced him as the ADGP, Prisons and Correctional Services.

What Happened

Seventeen remand prisoners escaped from the Thekkampatti sub-jail near Andipatti in Theni district late on Monday, October 26, 2026. The inmates shouted that one of them was having an epileptic seizure and needed help. When a jail warder unlocked the cell, the prisoners overpowered him and attacked other warders before fleeing. Special police teams tracked down and recaptured 13 of the escapees on Tuesday and the remaining four on Wednesday.

Actions Taken

Mr. Rathore visited the jail premises on Tuesday and stated that human error caused the escape. Nine prison guards were suspended following the incident, and an inquiry into the lapses was ordered. Mr. Rathore also announced that all watchtowers in district jails across the State will now have armed prison warders. These guards have been authorised to open fire when under attack or to stop a jailbreak.

Context

Sub-jails usually hold remand prisoners who are awaiting trial rather than convicted criminals serving long sentences. Security protocols in smaller district facilities are often reviewed when high-profile or mass escapes occur. State prison authorities regularly adjust security measures and personnel assignments in response to major security lapses.
