The BSE Sensex surged 905 points on Thursday, closing at 74,151.04, a rise of 1.24%. The NSE Nifty also climbed, adding 237.90 points to finish at 22,936.75. Heavy buying in banking and FMCG stocks powered the rally, while Brent crude fell 1.18% to $113.96 per barrel. Adani Ports led gains, up over 5% after reporting an 18% jump in quarterly profit to ₹3,682.44 crore on higher revenue. Kotak Mahindra Bank, Power Grid, Eternal, Bajaj Finance, State Bank of India, Hindustan Unilever, Titan, NTPC, Bharat Electronics and Infosys also ended in positive territory. Lagging stocks included Trent, Maruti Suzuki India, Tech Mahindra and HDFC Bank. ## Reaction Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said the market benefited from the U.S. Fed’s rate pause, modest oil‑price easing and fresh institutional buying, which lifted risk appetite despite a challenging global backdrop. He noted that strong consumer demand kept FMCG stocks ahead and that financials, IT, realty and power showed broad participation, though high input costs, a weak rupee and geopolitical risks remain concerns. ## Context Indian equity markets often move with global monetary cues and oil price changes, and a pause in U.S. rate hikes typically supports domestic risk assets.
