Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has been served a legal demand for Rs 29.67 crore by production house Eclatant Films. The demand appears in a public notice printed in the 24th and 31st October 2026 issues of Atul Mohan's Complete Cinema magazine. The notice says a legal notice was sent to Varma on 15 October, asking him to clear dues of Rs 29,67,64,000, which includes accrued interest of Rs 11,38,92,000. The dispute traces back to a contract dated 10 April 2010 between Varma and Eclatant Films. The notice also cites a Bombay High Court order dated 17 April 2013 that relates to the same agreement. Eclatant Films has set a payment deadline of 30 October 2026 and warned that failure will trigger a contractual lien over Varma's shares, rights, revenues and exploitation rights in all projects covered by the agreement. The company further states that the contract obliges Varma to obtain a written No‑Objection Certificate before partnering with any third party for production, co‑production, direction or writing until the debt is cleared. Consequently, Eclatant Films cautions producers, distributors, broadcasters and streaming platforms against acquiring, licensing, distributing, broadcasting or streaming any such projects without the NOC, saying they do so at their own risk. The notice lists possible remedies including injunctions, recovery proceedings and enforcement of contractual security rights.
Context
The case highlights how Indian film contracts often tie future collaborations to financial clearances, and how producers can enforce liens to protect unpaid dues.
