A tribal organisation in Manipur has started a 48-hour shutdown in the Kangpokpi district after two young men went missing. The Committee on Tribal Unity announced the protest to demand the safe release of the two 20-year-olds. The shutdown began on Thursday at 5 p.m. and will run until October 31. According to the organisation, the youths disappeared on Wednesday evening around 5:30 p.m. while travelling between Hengbung and Taphou Kuki villages. The group suspects that non-Kuki extremists are behind the abduction of Thangginlun Chongloi and Paominlal Chongloi. During the 48-hour protest, shops, markets, transport, schools, and offices are expected to stay closed, though medical services, media workers, and security forces are exempt. The committee also accused the state government and security forces of treating the Kuki-Zomi community unfairly. The group stated that authorities act quickly when non-Kuki-Zo groups face danger, but remain silent or slow when Kuki-Zo people are attacked or kidnapped.
Context
Manipur has experienced severe ethnic tensions and violence between its different communities in recent years, leading to frequent protests, bandhs, and security challenges. Local groups often use district-wide shutdowns to press the administration for action during security crises. Tensions in the region remain high as communities monitor the response of security forces closely.
