Actor Soni Razdan recently shared how filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra honoured his promise and paid the cast of his 1986 movie Khamosh a full decade after its theatrical run. Soni stated that the director did not hand out salaries during the initial shoot because he funded the feature himself and promised to pay everyone once he earned the money back. Khamosh marked Vidhu's second feature film as a producer and featured a well-known cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Amol Palekar, and Pankaj Kapoor, with three main actors playing fictional versions of themselves. Even though the thriller won critical acclaim, it failed to make money at the box office when it first came out in cinemas. The project only turned into a cult hit years later in the 1990s after selling its television broadcast rights on early cable networks. True to his word, the filmmaker sent payment checks to the actors long after the release. Soni remembered being surprised when the money arrived at her home and calling the director, who simply reminded her of his initial promise. Soni is currently busy with new roles, having recently appeared in the theatrical film Om Ka Hari and the Netflix web series Shaque.

Context

Delays in receiving payment were common for actors working in independent or small-scale films during the 1980s before major satellite and digital revenue streams existed. Directors often had to wait until a project found a secondary buyer or television distributor years later to clear their production debts.
