Director Amar Kaushik has finished writing the script for Stree 3, and the horror-comedy sequel will release in 2028, according to producer Dinesh Vijan.
Production Plans
Vijan announced the update on the second day of FICCI FRAMES, stating that the third installment could arrive as an Independence Day or Christmas present in 2028. Before starting work on Stree 3, Kaushik will direct the mythological drama Mahavatar, which stars Vicky Kaushal and focuses on the story of Bhagwan Parshuram. Vijan noted that Kaushik will direct Mahavatar at the end of January, finish it by June, and begin shooting for Stree 3 by the end of next year.
Past Success
Stree 2 released in 2024 and became the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time in India by crossing ₹600 crore at the domestic box office. It followed the 2018 original film, both directed by Amar Kaushik. The second film featured a headless monster named Sarkate who terrorized the town of Chanderi, and starred Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee, and Tamannaah Bhatia. Actor Rajkummar Rao recently recalled that Kaushik was nervous when the first film crossed ₹70 to ₹75 crores, but was much more prepared for the massive success of the sequel.
Context
Indian cinema franchises have increasingly planned sequels years in advance to capitalize on established audience bases and cinematic universes. Horror-comedies have emerged as a particularly strong commercial genre at the domestic box office in recent years.
