Renault has launched the new Triber Turbo in India, featuring a 100 PS engine to answer buyer demands for more power. The vehicle starts at Rs 7.85 lakh for the Evolution trim, goes up to Rs 8.54 lakh for the Techno variant, and reaches Rs 9 lakh for the top-spec Emotion trim, all ex-showroom prices.

What Changed

The most important update is the new 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine shared with the Kiger and Duster, delivering 100 PS of peak power and 180 Nm of peak torque. This motor comes mated to a sole 5-speed manual gearbox, helping the car sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in about 11.5 seconds. Renault also added a revised engine management system, a new thermal management system that takes in up to 35 percent more air, revised underpinnings on the RGMP platform, and a revised suspension setup for better crash performance.

Design and Features

Visually, the turbo model looks identical to the non-turbo version except for a turbo badge on the rear tailgate. It measures 3,985 mm in length, 1,734 mm in width, and 1,643 mm in height, with a 2,636 mm wheelbase. It retains the same seating capacity for five adults and two children, along with features like an 8-inch infotainment screen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, push-button start, wireless charging, roof-mounted third-row AC vents, and removable third-row seats.

Driving Experience

The new powertrain offers better drivability and tractability compared to the older 1.0-litre non-turbo engine, allowing drivers to clear speed breakers in third gear without clutch modulation. The price difference for the turbo over the non-turbo Energy variant is Rs 1,11,295 for Evolution, Rs 1,09,780 for Techno, and Rs 94,550 for Emotion, with a promised fuel efficiency of 21 km/kg.

Context

Adding a turbocharger to smaller engines is a common industry trend to extract higher power and better highway performance without shifting to a larger, heavier engine displacement. The Renault Triber occupies a unique market space as a sub-four-meter multi-purpose vehicle designed to seat up to seven people at an affordable price point. Media drives for this new variant recently took place in the Delhi NCR region.
