The Samajwadi Party has named Reliance Industries executive Dhanraj Nathwani and veteran leader Ram Gopal Yadav as its candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh. While the party expected the nomination of Ram Gopal Yadav, who is an experienced leader and the uncle of party chief Akhilesh Yadav, the choice of Nathwani surprised the public and party members alike. Nathwani serves as Group President at the Mukesh Ambani-led conglomerate and holds director roles at Reliance New Energy Ltd and Reliance Projects & Property Management Services Ltd, according to his LinkedIn profile. He has worked with Reliance Industries for roughly 16 years, previously serving as Group Senior Vice-President, and also acts as Vice-President of the Gujarat Cricket Association. His professional background includes managing non-technical operations like finance, human resources, corporate affairs, and CSR activities at Reliance manufacturing units, alongside ties to the Dwarkadhish Temple Administrative Committee. His father, Parimal Nathwani, is a senior Reliance executive who secured his fourth straight term in the Upper House in June 2026 as an NDA-backed Independent from Jharkhand. Ten Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh are heading to the polls on October 16, just months ahead of the Assembly elections. The ruling NDA holds 292 MLAs in the 403-member Assembly, alongside two MLAs from Jansatta Dal, bringing its strength to 294, while the opposition Samajwadi Party has 101 MLAs and Congress has two.

Context

Rajya Sabha elections in state assemblies depend directly on the party strength of elected MLAs, where major parties generally secure seats in line with their numerical majority. Major political parties occasionally field external candidates or corporate figures to build broader alliances or strategic funding partnerships. These upper house contests serve as crucial indicators of political momentum ahead of upcoming state assembly races.
