The Samajwadi Party has named Reliance Industries group president Dhanraj Nathwani as one of its candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections from Uttar Pradesh. Party chief Akhilesh Yadav was present when Nathwani filed his nomination papers in Lucknow. The decision caught many by surprise because the party was originally expected to pick one of its own internal leaders for the seat. Party insiders noted that Nathwani had met Akhilesh Yadav in Delhi months prior and stayed in touch with the top leadership. Akhilesh Yadav stated that he is glad to send a new generation member to the Upper House and noted that while other parties have a corporate footprint, the Samajwadi Party has now chosen to connect with the business world.
Ram Gopal Yadav and Candidate Math
Alongside Nathwani, the Samajwadi Party has also nominated senior leader Ram Gopal Yadav for another term in the Upper House. Ram Gopal is the younger brother of late party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav and serves as a key strategist for the party. For the ongoing biennial elections to 10 Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, a single candidate needs 37 votes to win. Out of 403 total assembly seats, six are vacant, leaving 397 sitting MLAs. With 101 MLAs in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, the Samajwadi Party comfortably holds 27 votes more than the 74 required to elect its first two candidates. Party sources indicate that fielding Nathwani could help the party secure a third seat, though that would require winning 10 additional votes beyond its current strength.
Background of the Nominees
Forty-year-old Dhanraj Nathwani is the son of Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani, who is also associated with Reliance Industries and recently secured a fourth term in the Upper House as an independent. Dhanraj Nathwani has spent about 16 years with Reliance, currently serving as a group president and overseeing major divisions including the Jamnagar manufacturing complex and Reliance Jio operations in Gujarat. Beyond his corporate role, he is also active in sports administration, serving as president of the Gujarat Cricket Association after succeeding Amit Shah.
Context
Rajya Sabha elections in large states like Uttar Pradesh often involve careful numerical calculations among assembly members to secure the exact number of preferential votes needed for victory. Political parties occasionally look beyond traditional political ranks to field candidates with corporate or administrative backgrounds for upper house representation. The biennial polls determine the composition of Parliament's upper chamber as existing members complete their terms.
