Filmmaker Karan Johar is ending his celebrity talk show Koffee With Karan after nine seasons. In an emotional promo video shared on Wednesday, Karan announced that Season 9 will be the final run for the show, streaming on JioHotstar starting October 14.

The Journey

The show first began in August 2004, following a 22-year-long association with the format. When Karan initially pitched the concept to his father, producer Yash Johar, his father questioned who would pay him just to chat with his friends. Yash Johar passed away on June 26, 2004, shortly before the first episode was shot on August 16 that same year. Over the course of 8 seasons and 161 episodes, the show featured guests who were lovers, friends, and family members, with some later getting married and others parting ways. Karan recalled that the controversial series brought him the enduring label of nepotism, sparked intense public conjecture, and even nearly put an end to the careers of national icons. He noted that people frequently ask him about the next season of the show rather than his upcoming feature films.

Final Farewell

In a press note, Karan reflected that some journeys do not have planned endings, but one simply knows when it is time to let them go. He stated that the final season is his way of raising the mug one last time with gratitude, love, and the audience, inviting viewers to share one last cup of coffee. The upcoming season will feature a final round of gossip, rapid-fire segments, and the iconic coffee hampers, with the host expressing readiness for the trolls and comments that may follow.

Context

Celebrity chat shows have long been a staple of Indian television, serving as pop culture touchstones that drive mainstream entertainment conversations. Formats that rely on candid celebrity banter often balance playful gossip with high-stakes public scrutiny, making them significant cultural phenomena. Shows of this scale typically leave a lasting imprint on the public perception of film stars and industry trends.
