West Indies opening batsman Justin Greaves has been ruled out of the second one-day international against India in Guwahati after picking up an injury. During the first match in Thiruvananthapuram, Greaves scored his maiden ODI century by making 101 runs from 108 balls. He suffered a calf strain while batting but continued through the pain to complete his hundred. Due to the seriousness of the injury, he did not take the field during India's innings. According to an ICC report, Greaves is completely out of the second ODI and remains in doubt for the third and final match on October 3. He is not part of the T20 series squad.
Team Impact
His absence is a major blow for the visiting team, which trails 1-0 in the series and faces a must-win situation in Guwahati. Sherfane Rutherford, who missed the first match due to personal reasons, is expected to return to the playing eleven to strengthen the middle order.
Context
Calf strains are common muscle injuries in cricket that happen due to high physical stress during long innings, and teams often rest players to avoid making the damage worse. Losing an in-form opening batter makes it much harder for a team to bounce back when they are already behind in a bilateral series.
