Project Approval

The Union Cabinet approved the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III scheme on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, with a total cost of ₹1,86,405 crore. Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the meeting that cleared this new project.

Transmission and Storage

The plan sets up an intra-state transmission system to move 135 gigawatts of renewable energy across different states and union territories. It also includes setting up 50 gigawatt-hours of battery energy storage systems at developer sites or key grid locations to manage peak demand and power supply drops.

Funding and Implementation

The project total includes ₹1,36,378 crore for transmission systems and ₹50,000 crore for battery storage, with a total central financial support of ₹54,082 crore. State Transmission Utilities will manage the work, and new greenfield projects will use competitive bidding while existing network upgrades use a cost-plus basis.

Context

This scheme supports India's wider national goals of reaching 500 gigawatts of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030 and 900 gigawatts by 2035. Government financial support helps lower transmission charges to keep electricity costs down for everyday citizens.

ExplainerWhy this matters

What Happened

The Union Cabinet approved the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III scheme with an outlay of over ₹1.86 lakh crore to build transmission lines and battery storage across Indian states.

Why It Matters

Solar and wind power change constantly depending on the weather and time of day, which can overload local grids and cause power cuts. Large battery storage and better transmission lines fix this problem by storing extra green energy and moving it smoothly where people need it most.

What Happens Next

State Transmission Utilities will take charge of implementing the projects, with new transmission lines going through competitive bidding before the targeted completion by FY 2032-33.
