Scheme Details

The Union Cabinet has approved the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III scheme with a total outlay of Rs 1,86,405 crore, targeted for completion by fiscal year 2033. The initiative aims to evacuate up to 135 gigawatts of renewable energy across states and includes a central financial support of Rs 54,082 crore to help offset intra-state transmission charges and keep power costs down for citizens.

Funding and Battery Storage

Of the total budget, Rs 1,36,378 crore is earmarked for developing intra-state transmission systems, while Rs 50,000 crore is allocated for deploying 50 gigawatt-hours of Battery Energy Storage Systems at developer sites or grid locations. Greenfield projects will use tariff-based competitive bidding under a build-own-operate-maintain model, and state transmission utilities will act as the overall implementing agency.

Context

India is scaling up its clean energy capacity to meet national targets of 500 GW by 2030 and 900 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2035. However, rapid deployment of renewable plants has often outpaced transmission infrastructure, leading to frequent curtailment of solar generation during peak hours.

ExplainerWhy this matters

What Happened

The Union Cabinet approved the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III scheme with a Rs 1.86 lakh crore outlay to build transmission lines and battery storage systems for renewable energy.

Why It Matters

India's solar and wind farms often produce more electricity than local transmission lines can carry, forcing grid operators to switch off plants and waste clean power. Adding large-scale battery storage and dedicated power lines ensures this green energy actually reaches homes and factories instead of going to waste.

What Happens Next

State Transmission Utilities will now begin implementing the projects through competitive bidding and cost-plus models, with the entire rollout targeted for completion by 2033.
