OpenAI has introduced 'Dots', a new line of always-on personal AI agents built to handle everyday chores like booking restaurant reservations alongside complex work processes such as invoicing. CEO Sam Altman and other executives unveiled the technology during a livestreamed presentation at the company's annual developers' conference on Tuesday, September 29.
How Dots Works
Powered by the GPT-6 Astra model, each Dots agent runs inside its own virtual machine or cloud computer. The system uses a built-in browser and plugins to connect with over 4,000 apps while learning continuously from user feedback. Users can communicate with one or multiple Dots via text chat or voice calls on desktop, web, and mobile versions of ChatGPT, with integration for Slack and Microsoft Teams coming soon.
Features and Availability
Dots work 24/7 on assigned tasks, retain context across different communication channels, and perform proactive background research in a read-only mode when idle. The agents can be named and customised by users, who retain full control and can step in at any time. At launch, Dots is available to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium subscribers, while enterprise users gain access to a beta version.
Context
Personal AI agents represent a fast-growing sector in the technology industry, with companies like Meta, Microsoft, and SpaceXAI launching competing tools to assist users with everyday workflows. These systems rely on broad access to user apps and data to automate tasks, prompting developers to introduce various security controls and virtual environments to safeguard sensitive information.
