Representative image · PexelsApple is facing production challenges for its upcoming foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, ahead of its scheduled October 23 launch. Final assembly yields at Foxconn reached just over sixty percent as of September 17. The low yield is driven by Apple's strict quality requirements and the complex nature of the foldable design.
Production Issues
Apple, Foxconn, and component suppliers like Samsung Display are working to fix these problems. Samsung Display faced previous issues with low yields, delivery delays, and design changes for foldable OLED panels and hinge parts. Apple also experimented with liquid metal for the hinge before choosing a 3D-printed titanium piece. Contract manufacturers are currently deciding whether to improve yield or increase output, as pushing for higher production could raise scrap costs. Apple has set a global sales target of six million to eight million units for 2026, which is lower than the typical twenty million to thirty million units shipped for standard Pro models.
Launch Details
Apple announced the iPhone Duo on September 9. Pre-orders open on October 16, and the phone goes on sale starting October 23, with a starting price of 2,99,900 rupees in India. Apple has not confirmed the reported assembly yield figures.
Context
New smartphone designs often face early manufacturing hurdles as factories adjust their equipment and processes for unfamiliar parts. Foldable screens and complex mechanical hinges require high precision, which naturally slows down production during the initial rollout phase.
