The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation has warned against the unsafe use of painkillers and antibiotics, asking hospitals, pharmacies, and doctors to follow prescription rules. Frequent use of painkillers like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for headaches or cramps can harm the kidneys without showing early warning signs. Dr Sagar Gupta from Asian Hospital states that kidney problems often stay hidden until function has already dropped. Regular intake over many weeks increases risks, especially for older adults, people with diabetes, and those who are dehydrated or have lower kidney function. Antibiotics can also damage kidney cells or cause inflammation when taken without a doctor's advice. Dr Gupta notes that antibiotics cannot cure viral illnesses like common respiratory infections and must only be taken for the correct duration.

Context

Many common medicines bought without a prescription can put extra stress on the body if taken regularly without medical supervision. Doctors always advise finding the root cause of recurring pain rather than just using medicines to hide the symptoms.
