A social media post from hedge fund manager Stanley Druckenmiller drove a sharp rise in a crypto-linked stock and token on Thursday. TradeXYZ, a developer of perpetual futures markets on the Hyperliquid exchange, announced a partnership with Intercontinental Exchange to bring its products into the U.S. market. Both companies are currently seeking the necessary regulatory approvals for the move. Shortly after the announcement, Druckenmiller shared a message on X stating that he is an investor in TradeXYZ and plans to use its product. Representatives for Druckenmiller later confirmed this statement. Options traders quickly reacted by targeting Hyperliquid Strategies, a publicly traded company that invests in the HYPE token powering the Hyperliquid exchange. Trading volume on Hyperliquid Strategies crossed 111,000 options on Thursday, marking a sixfold increase over the 30-day average. The company's underlying shares jumped 19% to reach a three-week high. Market flows favored bullish bets, with nearly 86,000 call options trading compared to fewer than 27,000 put options. Cboe LiveVol data showed that buyers initiated roughly four times as many calls as puts. David Schamis, the CEO of Hyperliquid Strategies, welcomed the partnership in a text message, calling Intercontinental Exchange an ideal partner for traditional finance. Schamis stated that the deal highlights strong demand for perpetual futures and moves the asset class closer to regulated trading. The development also follows a surprise comment from President Donald Trump in August about regulators working to bring the exchange onshore.
Context
Perpetual futures are a popular type of crypto derivative contract that let traders speculate on price movements without a fixed expiration date. Regulatory approvals in the United States often play a major role in how easily traditional investors and major financial firms can access digital asset products. Major endorsements from high-profile investors frequently trigger sudden shifts in market activity for smaller crypto-linked equities.
