District Magistrate of Anantnag has declared the October 27, 2026 elections to the District Bar Association null and void, citing violations of official orders and mandatory requirements. The magistrate said the poll was held in blatant breach of orders, without meeting prerequisite conditions, without informing the office and without any permission. He noted that the process breached the Societies Registration Act 1860, as applied in Jammu and Kashmir, and the Indian Trust Act 1882. The order also reminded that elections were barred by a directive dated 02‑01‑2025 until the bar submits its registration certificate, constitution or memorandum, bye‑laws, a list of current and past executive members for ten years with names, designations and contact details, and detailed financial statements. Around 700 lawyers are enrolled in the Anantnag Bar, and the vote was for the posts of president and secretary. A senior lawyer, who asked to stay anonymous, argued that the poll had received proper permission and that the magistrate’s notice arrived at night. He added that similar elections have been held peacefully in Kulgam, Shopian and Bandipora and that the Anantnag poll aimed to benefit lawyers and uphold court decorum. Another lawyer said the election was conducted peacefully, saw no breach of any prohibitory order, and could not understand which provisions justified the nullification. He warned that the move revives the long‑standing tussle between the judiciary and the executive, and insisted that lack of registration alone cannot make the election illegal. ## Context The district’s bar association elections are normally overseen by the magistrate, and a failure to register the body under the societies law can lead to legal challenges such as this one.
