Indian shares are set to open modestly higher on Friday, buoyed by an earnings‑driven rebound but weighed down by rising crude prices.

Market Overview

GIFT Nifty futures traded at 22,981 at 7:42 a.m. IST, pointing to a positive start for the Nifty 50, which closed at 22,936.75 on Thursday. Both the Nifty and the BSE Sensex rose over 1% in the previous session after strong quarterly results from major constituents and after the U.S. Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged. In October the two indices have gained about 1.4% and 2.3% respectively, ending a two‑month selling streak. Analysts at Geojit Investments and Equinomics Research say sentiment is helped by talk of a long‑term capital‑gains‑tax review and steady corporate earnings despite global headwinds.

Risks

"Overall market bias has improved to cautiously positive, supported by the breakout from recent consolidation and broad‑based sector buying, though elevated crude prices remains an important risk," said Hitesh Tailor, technical research analyst at Choice Broking. Brent crude futures jumped 2.2% to $117.4 a barrel after Yemen’s Houthis attacked Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura refinery and airports, dimming hopes for U.S.–Iran peace talks. Higher oil prices are expected to cap any further market gains.

Earnings Highlights

Companies reporting later in the day include Reliance Industries, Sun Pharma and Bharat Electronics, which could shape short‑term direction. Recent earnings reports showed Coal India missing profit estimates, Godrej Consumer’s profit slipping slightly, IndiGo narrowing its loss, Trent posting a 23% profit rise, P N Gadgil’s profit up 53% year‑on‑year, and Blue Star’s profit climbing 25% on strong AC demand.

Context

Indian markets often feel the squeeze from global oil price spikes, as higher import bills can dent corporate margins and consumer spending. At the same time, expectations of a tax policy review can lift investor confidence even when external risks linger.
