Olympic javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is set to resume training and start rehabilitation in the next couple of weeks after recovering from an ankle injury. The 28-year-old athlete sustained the injury during training in August this year, which forced him to miss the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan and the Diamond League finale.

Medical Care And Support

Chopra consulted orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala and followed strict medical advice to take complete rest for his ankle. He stated that his condition has improved a lot since the first month and a half. He also credited the Sports Authority of India and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme for providing him long-term support during his career.

New Sports Scheme

Apart from his injury update, Chopra welcomed the Union Cabinet's approval of the Khelo India Sports Goods Manufacturing Scheme on October 28. The scheme has a budget of over Rs 1800 crore and aims to turn India into a sports goods manufacturing hub over the next decade. He noted that this will help athletes who currently face difficulties in buying equipment locally or have to import it from abroad.

Context

Neeraj Chopra won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and a silver medal at the Paris Games in 2024. Elite athletes often rely on government-backed initiatives like TOPS and SAI for financial and logistical support during injury rehabilitation and international competitions.
