A regular sour taste in your mouth upon waking is often linked to nighttime acid reflux, according to a medical specialist. Dr Saurabh Bansal, a general, minimal access, and gastrointestinal surgeon and the director of THE CLINICS, explained that this happens when stomach contents flow backwards into the oesophagus during sleep. Gravity normally helps keep stomach contents down while people are upright, but that advantage decreases when lying flat. Swallowing also happens less frequently during sleep, which slows down how the oesophagus clears refluxed material. Other early signs of reflux include food or liquid coming back into the mouth, a persistent cough, or throat irritation. Several habits can trigger nighttime acid reflux, such as eating dinner close to bedtime, lying down soon afterwards, skipping lunch and having a heavy dinner, bingeing on snacks late at night, or drinking coffee in the evening. However, coffee does not need a blanket ban as long as it is consumed in moderation without triggering symptoms. Excess abdominal weight can also increase pressure on the stomach and cause reflux, while a hiatus hernia can play a role in some patients.

Context

Acid reflux is a common digestive issue that often relates to diet, posture, and daily habits. Medical experts generally recommend consulting a doctor for persistent symptoms rather than relying on self-medication, especially when warning signs like difficulty swallowing or chest pain appear.
