Medical experts warn that every minute counts during a stroke, as delayed treatment increases the risk of permanent brain damage and death. Without oxygen and nutrients, brain cells quickly malfunction and die when blood flow is stopped.
Types and Treatments
There are two main types of stroke, which are ischaemic and hemorrhagic. Dr Guruprasad S Pujar, a neurologist at SS Narayana Health Super Specialty Center in Davangere, explains that ischaemic stroke patients may benefit from clot-dissolving medicine or a clot-removal procedure. Hemorrhagic strokes involve bleeding from a ruptured blood vessel and may require blood pressure control or surgery.
Symptoms and Care
Doctors recommend using the FAST approach to spot warning signs, noting that symptoms often happen suddenly. Patients should never wait for symptoms to stop or try home remedies, but instead call emergency services right away. Eligible ischaemic stroke patients may receive clot-dissolving medication within four and a half hours, or mechanical thrombectomy up to 24 hours after symptom onset in select cases.
Context
Lifestyle factors like controlling blood pressure, managing diabetes, avoiding tobacco, and staying physically active help lower overall stroke risk. Post-stroke recovery usually involves physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy to help patients regain their independence.
