Diana Shnaider defeated Alex Eala in a three-set quarterfinal match at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, winning 6-2, 7-6(5), 4-6 in two hours and 52 minutes on Friday. Just eight days after their previous meeting at the Ningbo Open, the Russian world number 13 overcame the Filipina opponent once again. Eala started strong by claiming the first set 6-2 after winning five games in a row. The second set proved much tighter as both players held serve, leading to a tiebreak where a late double fault from Eala allowed Shnaider to take control and seal the breaker with an ace. In the deciding third set, Shnaider broke Eala's serve in the third game and held on despite a medical timeout taken by Eala for her ankle. Shnaider hit 43 winners while Eala produced 45 winners in the high-level contest. Following the win, Shnaider advances to her fifth semifinal of the season to face Mia Pohankova. Eala will next play at the WTA 250 Hong Kong Tennis Open starting November 2.

Context

Tennis players often face each other in quick succession during the busy professional tour schedule, especially as top performers travel through Asian tournaments late in the year. Matches that go to three sets and tiebreaks demand high physical endurance, making medical timeouts for minor injuries common during grueling rallies.
