Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta passes away at 57 before starting Kaante sequel with Sanjay Dutt

Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta died at the age of 57 after suffering a head injury on a Saturday morning, leaving behind plans to direct Kaante 2 with Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Manoj Bajpayee, Jaideep Ahlawat, Vijay Varma, and Ali Fazal. Gupta started his career with the hit film Aatish: Feel the Fire and worked with Dutt on several projects including Jung, Khauff, Kaante, Plan, Musafir, and Zinda. Their long friendship broke down between 2007 and 2011 after a fallout caused by outside interference.
Career Setbacks And Personal Toll
During his fallout with Dutt, Gupta faced a professional ban where no one was willing to work with him, forcing him to sell his Goa house to clear market loans while dealing with a simultaneous economic recession and box office failures. His personal life also suffered as family members distanced themselves, including a sister who aligned with Dutt, while he simultaneously took on the care of his late sister's two daughters and brought his other sister and her sons from Delhi to Mumbai. Gupta nearly closed down his film office to rent it out, but the birth of his son motivated him to pitch Shootout at Wadala to Ekta Kapoor, which revived his career.
Reconciliation And Industry Realities
Gupta and Dutt ended their feud at Amitabh Bachchan's seventieth birthday party in 2012, though Gupta noted their bond never fully returned to its original state and they did not work together again. During his difficult period, Anil Kapoor stood by him by stating he would only refuse to work with Gupta if Dutt provided a direct reason. Gupta also reflected on past friendships in the film industry, noting that Saif Ali Khan once described their bond as one that lasted only for the duration of a film, which taught him that many industry relationships are purely work-based.
Context
Filmmakers in the Hindi film industry often build long-term creative partnerships with specific actors that define their best-known works. Public reconciliations at high-profile industry events frequently mark shifts in personal relationships within Bollywood.
