Congress leader Jairam Ramesh shared a rare 1947 photograph of a young Indira Gandhi greeting Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on October 31, 2026, marking Patel's birth anniversary and Indira Gandhi's death anniversary.

Photo Details

The picture was taken in early November 1947 in New Delhi during a function hosted by the Prime Minister for delegates to the Asian Regional Conference of the International Labour Organisation. The image shows a 30-year-old Indira Gandhi greeting the 72-year-old Deputy Prime Minister, while Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru looks on. Mr. Ramesh stated that so-called distorians cannot erase the profound respect and admiration that Indira Gandhi had for Patel.

Tributes and History

Mr. Ramesh noted that both leaders shaped subcontinental geography and history. He celebrated Patel on his 151st birth anniversary, calling him a key architect of India's freedom who made national unity a living reality and inspired the White Revolution. He also marked the 42nd death anniversary of Indira Gandhi, describing her as a courageous personality who strengthened India as a nuclear and space power and catalysed the Green Revolution. Furthermore, he mentioned that Nehru unveiled a statue of Patel in Godhra on February 13, 1949, which was the only statue of a living person unveiled by Nehru.

Context

Sardar Patel served as India's first Home Minister after independence in 1947 and integrated over 560 princely states into the Indian Union. Indira Gandhi served as India's first and only woman Prime Minister before her assassination in New Delhi on October 31, 1984. Public leaders frequently share archival photographs and historical tributes on social media during the birth and death anniversaries of major national figures.
