Winter Forecast

The weather department says India will experience a milder winter this year with daytime temperatures staying higher than normal. Bright afternoon sun will replace the usual pleasant chill of November. In contrast, nighttime conditions will show two different patterns across the country.

Causes of Weather Shift

This weather pattern happens because sea water in the middle of the Pacific Ocean has grown very warm. According to IMD models, this strong El Nino will stay active through November and December. El Nino changes wind patterns and blocks cold winds coming from the north, which made October the warmest since 1901 with a recorded temperature of 32.43 degrees Celsius. The normal monthly average maximum temperature for October is 31.37 degrees.

Storm Impacts

At the same time, the effects of the Arnab storm continue to be felt. Dense fog covered early mornings in key north Indian states including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and Jharkhand witnessed cloudy skies along with a drop in temperatures. Meanwhile, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh remain under a yellow alert for rain.

Context

El Nino is a climate pattern that describes the unusual warming of surface waters in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. Changes in ocean temperatures directly influence global wind patterns, shifting weather systems and rainfall distribution across distant regions like India.
