Tata Motors has started work on a new electric car codenamed Kuno, which will directly rival the MG Windsor EV in the midsize segment.

Vehicle Placement and Size

In Tata's lineup, the Kuno will sit between the next-generation Nexon EV, codenamed Garud, and the Sierra EV. The Kuno will be around 4.3 metres long, making it nearly the same size as the Windsor EV at 4,295 mm. For comparison, the Nexon EV measures 3,995 mm, while the Sierra EV has a length of 4,340 mm. Reports estimate that the Kuno could be introduced between 2027 and 2028.

Platform and Features

The Kuno EV will use the Acti.ev platform, which already powers other electric cars from Tata. This platform supports multiple body styles and powertrain options, including front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive. Key features of the platform include a flat floor design and a space-saving battery layout. These elements will help create a spacious cabin, similar to the roomy interior that makes the Windsor popular with family-oriented buyers. Specific details about the Kuno's battery pack and electric motor are not available yet.

Production and Pricing

Tata plans to manufacture the Kuno EV at its Sanand plant in Gujarat. The company aims for a yearly production capacity of around 80,000 to one lakh units. The car will have a competitive price tag and may also include a Battery-as-a-Service option to challenge its competitors.

Context

Tata Motors currently leads the Indian electric passenger vehicle market and offers the widest range of models. Building a presence in the midsize segment is a natural step for the company as competition continues to grow.
