Partners Group Holdings AG has capped withdrawals from an 8.6 billion dollar vehicle aimed at rich people, sending a troubling signal to an industry that wants to grow in the wealth market. Wednesday's move hit the stock prices of listed peers as well as Partners Group itself, with the firm declining more than 17% and competitors EQT AB and CVC Capital Partners Plc slipping more than 6%.
Withdrawal Limits And Reasons
The gated Global Value SICAV evergreen fund faced redemption requests for nearly 10% of its net assets, which triggered an automatic stop at 5%. Chief Executive Officer David Layton stated that the firm had plenty of spare cash but needed money available to keep investing in deals. Investors wanting their money back will have to join a queue for future quarters. Layton noted that redemption pressure from private credit has started moving into other asset classes.
Company Pressures And Context
Apart from industry pressures, Partners Group faced weaker net inflows in the first quarter due to declining performance. In April, short-seller Grizzly Research targeted the firm with claims of mismarking assets, which Partners called defamatory and misleading. Citigroup Inc. analysts wrote that those concerns seemed mostly overdone, though Layton admitted the attack hurt investor sentiment.
Context
Private equity funds rely on long-term money locks because selling entire businesses takes much longer than selling properties or loans. Even though retail-focused evergreen funds have grown fast, they still make up a small portion of total private equity assets compared to private credit.
