A weather depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal turned into a deep depression early Sunday morning on November 1, 2026. The India Meteorological Department recorded the system at 5:30 a.m. centered about 700 km east-southeast of Chennai, 770 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam, 770 km southeast of Machilipatnam, and 810 km east-southeast of Ongole.

Path And Intensity

The weather system is moving west-northwestwards and will likely become a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal within six hours. It is expected to grow stronger into a severe cyclonic storm over the westcentral Bay of Bengal by November 2. Fishing boats have already been parked at the Visakhapatnam fishing harbour after warnings told fishermen to stay out of the sea.

Local Impact

This new weather system comes just days after severe cyclonic storm Arnab hit Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on October 28. Voting for municipal elections is currently happening in 92 urban local bodies in the State, and no major rainfall has been reported so far.

Context

Weather systems over the Bay of Bengal frequently intensify during this time of the year, often bringing heavy rain and strong winds to coastal regions. Meteorological departments track these storms continuously to issue timely warnings and protect local communities.
