A depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm named Murasu, threatening the Andhra Pradesh coast just days after Cyclone Arnab. According to the India Meteorological Department, the system may make landfall on the morning of Tuesday, November 3, bringing sustained wind speeds of 80 to 90 kmph with gusts reaching 100 kmph.

Rain And Wind Warnings

The IMD has forecast very heavy rainfall in Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on November 2 and 3, with isolated extremely heavy rain in some areas. South Odisha is also likely to receive heavy rainfall on November 3 and 4, while coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and southern regions brace for severe weather. Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the sea until at least Wednesday afternoon, as large parts of the west-central, south-east, and central Bay of Bengal experience dangerous conditions. Meanwhile, S. Stella, Head of the IMD Centre Hyderabad, told The Hindu that the system will weaken into a depression by the time it reaches Telangana, bringing light to moderate rainfall and isolated heavy showers from November 2 to 4.

Context

This developing system follows closely on the heels of Cyclone Arnab, which crossed the same coasts on October 28 with wind speeds of around 130 kmph, causing three deaths and the evacuation of over 1.8 lakh people. Despite back-to-back tropical storms in the Bay of Bengal, the IMD predicts generally below-normal rainfall across much of India for November 2026, alongside persisting El Nino conditions.
