The ruling party is launching a major counter-campaign in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh featuring six padyatras, nearly two hundred youth meetings, and community feasts for farmers.

What Happened

The campaign directly responds to recent opposition rallies, including a march to Ramlila Maidan in Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The Bharatiya Janata Party finalised these events at its state executive committee meeting in Lucknow. Six regional units will organise the protest marches from November 3 to 5. Lucknow will host the Awadh region march led by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, while Union Minister J P Nadda will lead the Braj region event in Bareilly on the same day. Subsequent marches include Gorakhpur led by party president Nitin Nabin, Prayagraj led by Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, and Kanpur led by Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will lead the final march for West UP in Ghaziabad on November 5.

Campaign Details

The protest marches are themed around saving democracy and removing anarchy. Regional units have received targets to mobilise at least twenty-five thousand people for each event, with leaders and workers walking a distance of at least one kilometre. The party has also printed a four-page pamphlet through its publication Kamal Jyoti to address what it calls misconceptions about the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The document clarifies that decisions in the Election Commission involve consensus among all commissioners, and explains that thirteen crore deletions occurred due to absence, shifting, death, or duplication rather than arbitrary removal. Furthermore, the publication states that voter roll deletions do not affect ration, pension, or passport facilities.

Context

Political parties frequently use mass mobilisation campaigns like padyatras to demonstrate grassroots strength ahead of crucial state elections. Uttar Pradesh remains a vital electoral battleground where major national and regional alliances compete intensely for political influence. Such campaigns typically serve to rally party cadres and shape public discourse on contentious administrative issues.
