West Bengal government issued a notification on November 1, 2026 that will appoint one family member of every person killed in political violence since 2001 to a Group D state job. The decision follows Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s announcement at a gathering in Garbeta on October 31, where he told affected families to apply to the district magistrate. The notification, signed by Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal, treats the appointments as a one‑time exception and does not alter the regular recruitment process.

Eligibility

Only one dependent per victim can be considered. Eligible relatives include the spouse, son, daughter or third‑gender child; for an unmarried victim a brother or sister may also qualify, subject to conditions. Applicants must have a monthly family income of ₹50,000 or less and submit the FIR, death certificate and proof of relationship. A screening committee led by the District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police will verify each case.

Background

West Bengal has witnessed repeated episodes of political violence, especially during panchayat elections, over the last few decades. The BJP claims its workers faced attacks by Trinamool supporters after the 2016 local polls and again following the 2021 Assembly election, leading to several deaths. The new job scheme is the first state‑level compensation measure targeting families of those killed in such clashes.

Context

The scheme covers victims of political clashes over the past 25 years, a period that spans roughly 11 years of Left Front rule and the remaining years under the Trinamool Congress. By providing jobs, the state aims to address the long‑standing grievances of families left without livelihood after such incidents.
