Ernakulam Rural Cyber Police have filed a chargesheet against YouTuber Mohammad Nihad, known as ‘Thoppi’, accusing him of publishing obscene material on social media. The case was registered on the night of June 20, 2026 under the Information Technology Act and related statutes. Police say Nihad posted nude photographs of several former friends after a personal fallout. Investigators claim the charges are legally sound, while the YouTuber says he was betrayed by those friends. The complaint originated from lawyer Sreejith Perumana, who alleged internal disputes in the YouTuber’s former group over revenue sharing and live‑streaming arrangements. Perumana’s filing also asked for probes into alleged sexual abuse of minors and drug use. Following the complaint, the State Police Chief ordered a wider investigation into those claims. Cyber officials approached YouTube and secured removal of Thoppi’s channel. When Nihad missed a scheduled questioning, a lookout circular was issued, but he later secured anticipatory bail from the Kerala High Court. Earlier inquiries by Kochi City Cyber Police and Kalamassery police were dropped because the alleged offences were deemed outside their territorial limits. Ernakulam Rural Police took charge because the purported streaming of obscene content occurred from Varapuzha, where Nihad lived at the time.

Context

The incident highlights how Indian cyber law is applied to online content disputes and shows the role of regional police when alleged crimes cross jurisdictional boundaries.
