GeneralDelhi Court Pushes Back Formal Charges in IRCTC Hotel Case Against Lalu Yadav and Family

A Delhi court on Saturday adjourned the formal framing of money laundering charges against former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi, son Tejashwi Yadav, and six others in the Enforcement Directorate's IRCTC hotel case to October 30. Special Judge Prashant Kumar pushed back the proceedings and asked the Enforcement Directorate to seek instructions based on the order of a predecessor court.

Background

Out of 16 people originally accused by the Enforcement Directorate, the predecessor court discharged seven on September 10 and ordered the framing of charges against the remaining nine. The predecessor court previously noted there was strong suspicion against the accused and rejected the defense argument that the case was a political vendetta. Last October, the Central Bureau of Investigation also framed corruption charges against the Rashtriya Janata Dal patriarch and 11 others in connection with the same alleged scam.

Allegations

The Enforcement Directorate alleges that between 2005 and 2014, when Lalu Prasad served as the railways minister, tenders to run IRCTC hotels in Ranchi and Puri were manipulated to favor Sujata Hotels. According to the agency, hotel directors Vinay Kochhar and Vijay Kochhar transferred prime land in Patna to Delight Marketing Company Pvt. Ltd. at undervalued rates as a favor in return. This company was controlled by Lalu Prasad's close associates Prem Chand Gupta and his wife Sarla Gupta, who later transferred the shares to Rabri Devi and Tejashwi Yadav at a very low price, with the firm eventually renamed Lara Projects.

Context

High-profile corruption and money laundering cases involving senior political figures often face lengthy legal procedures in Indian courts before actual trials begin. Legal arguments regarding the formal framing of charges represent an early stage in the judicial process where a judge decides if there is enough material evidence to officially put the accused on trial.

What Happened

A Delhi court delayed the formal framing of money laundering charges against former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, his family members, and several others until October 30 in the IRCTC hotel scam case investigated by the Enforcement Directorate.

Why It Matters

This case highlights ongoing legal battles involving high-ranking Indian political figures and allegations of corruption and money laundering tied to public office. The scrutiny around how public tenders and prime land properties changed hands forms a core part of anti-corruption oversight in governance.

What Happens Next

The Enforcement Directorate is expected to seek further instructions based on the predecessor court's September 10 order, and the court will proceed with the formal framing of charges on the newly scheduled date of October 30.
