UPDATE - follow-up to Initiative to strengthen perinatal mental healthcare to be piloted in T.N.'s Villupuram district: The upcoming 'Thai Manam' project is rolling out training for Village Health Nurses and doctors at the grassroot level in Tamil Nadu to check expecting and new mothers for psychological issues like depression.

Training Plan

Medical staff and nurses across four specific blocks in Villupuram district—namely Kanai, Koliyanur, Vallam, and Mugaiyur—are currently learning how to spot and manage these mental health needs early on.

Partners

This rollout comes together through a joint effort between the Institute of Mental Health, the public health directorate, and the apex epidemiology research body under the central health research network.

Context

Experts note that worldwide research shows between ten and twenty percent of expecting mothers experience depression during pregnancy. Bringing mental health checks into routine village-level clinics helps reach women who might otherwise miss out on timely care.
