Spanish football is in mourning following the death of Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel, who passed away at age 30 after suffering a cardiac arrest and serious head and chest injuries from an on-field collision.
The Incident
The tragedy occurred during a Spanish second-division match between Tenerife and FC Andorra on Monday at Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López. In the final minutes, during stoppage time with the score tied 2-2, De Miguel rushed to get to the ball and suffered a heavy impact when Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono collided with him, with Owono's knee appearing to strike the forward. De Miguel lay motionless on the pitch as medical staff treated him before he was taken to a hospital by ambulance. According to BBC Sport and Spanish media reports, including Marca, De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest in the ambulance and was resuscitated by paramedics on the way. The referee showed Owono a straight red card for the challenge and abandoned the match in the 108th minute. Tenerife announced that De Miguel died at 8:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday.
Tributes and Reactions
CD Tenerife released a statement saying they were heartbroken, with a lump in their throats, and unable to believe the tragedy. FC Andorra, along with other clubs, the Spanish football federation, and La Liga, extended their condolences. Former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, who co-owns Andorra, shared a personal message stating he was sorry with all his soul and wishing him rest in peace. La Liga president Javier Tebas, Real Madrid and France striker Kylian Mbappe, and De Miguel's former clubs Castellon and Leganés also expressed their grief. Following the tragedy, the Spanish football federation postponed Tuesday's Copa del Rey and Copa del Reina fixtures.
Background
De Miguel was a Madrid native who made his professional debut in 2015 with Leganés B before playing for various lower-division clubs and joining Tenerife in 2025 on a three-year deal. Similar fatal on-field incidents have occurred in the past, including the death of 19-year-old goalkeeper Raúl Ramírez in Spain last year after a fifth-division collision, and the 2001 death of Ukrainian goalkeeper Serhiy Perkhun after a match collision while playing for CSKA Moscow.
Context
Athletes in contact sports face severe risks from high-impact collisions, which can occasionally result in life-threatening cardiac events or traumatic injuries. Football governing bodies frequently postpone matches and implement strict medical protocols when emergencies happen on the pitch. These tragic events highlight the constant physical dangers present in professional sports at all levels.
