Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel, 30, died on Tuesday after suffering a serious head and chest injury in a LaLiga 2 match against Andorra.

What Happened

The forward was involved in a heavy collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono seven minutes into stoppage time while the game was tied 2‑2. Owono’s knee struck De Miguel’s head as he rushed to clear a long ball. De Miguel lay motionless on the pitch, was treated briefly on the field and then taken by ambulance from Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López to a hospital.

Reaction

Medical staff reported a cardiac arrest in the ambulance; paramedics managed to restart his heartbeat but his condition, described as "serious but stable" on Monday night, worsened neurologically on Tuesday morning. He was pronounced dead at 07:00 GMT (08:00 local time). CD Tenerife issued a statement saying the club is "heartbroken" and asked for privacy for the grieving family. The club also expressed that no words can ease the "overwhelming sadness". Andorra, co‑owned by former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué, sent condolences to De Miguel’s family, teammates and CD Tenerife. The referee showed Owono a straight red card and abandoned the match as players from both sides were visibly distressed, with several Tenerife teammates in tears.

Context

Fatal on‑field incidents are rare in professional football, and clubs typically release official statements to support families while respecting privacy. A red card for dangerous play is standard procedure when a player’s challenge endangers an opponent’s safety.
