BJP and ABVP hold protest rallies across Jharkhand over voter list revision disputes
Reported by Kavya Rao (Senior Writer) · The Hindu - National ·

The BJP and its student wing ABVP organized separate street marches across Jharkhand to accuse opposition parties of spreading false claims about electoral roll updates and democratic norms.
Giridih March
Hundreds of party workers joined a protest walk in Giridih under the leadership of state BJP president Aditya Sahu. The procession covered three hundred metres from Jhanda Maidan to Tower Chowk, with senior figures like opposition leader Babulal Marandi and former state president Ravindra Rai in attendance. Mr. Sahu claimed the opposition backs foreign interests and questioned public trust in Congress leadership, while contrasting past decades of rule with welfare programs delivered during twelve years of the Modi administration.
Voter List Claims
Mr. Marandi asserted that opposition groups have tried to mislead citizens ever since twenty fourteen regarding electronic voting machines and current voter roll revisions. He stated that the Special Intensive Revision removed names of foreign infiltrators rather than genuine citizens, accusing opponents of running a campaign to shield illegal entries.
Ranchi Student Rally
Simultaneously, the ABVP student group carried out a separate march in Ranchi from Bapu Vatika to Albert Ekka Chowk. Student leaders argued that political changes should occur through voting rather than street protests, criticizing what they termed an anarchic approach to government changes. Former student union official Vaibhav Meena challenged the opposition to present proof through proper channels instead of causing confusion, while central committee member Disha Ditya defended the voter list purification process as a necessary step to eliminate fake entries. State secretary Prakash Tuti added that student members will focus their energy on national development and cultural preservation.
Context
Electoral roll updates and revisions are routine administrative procedures conducted by election authorities to add new eligible voters and remove duplicate, deceased, or ineligible entries. Political parties frequently clash over these verification exercises, particularly ahead of upcoming elections, as disputes emerge over which names are included or excluded from the final lists.
