The death toll from a Russian attack on a humanitarian aid site in southern Ukraine reached 31 on Tuesday, with more than 45 people still missing under the rubble. Rescuers and volunteers searched the blast site of the destroyed facility and shelter in Komyushuvakha, a village in the Zaporizhzhia region, where bunker-busting bombs carrying nearly 1.5 tons of explosives were used in the attack. The dead included four police officers and two rescue workers, while at least five people were hurt. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia launched 289 attack drones, 17 ballistic missiles and 59 cruise missiles across nine regions, noting the barrage coincided with U.S. elections. Three days of mourning were declared in Zaporizhzhia. Meanwhile, in the northeast region of Kharkiv, a combined missile and drone attack wounded at least 62 people, and a strike damaged a medical facility in the Nemyshlianskyi district, forcing the transfer of over 200 patients. In the Dnipro area, a separate attack killed one person and wounded 17, while damaging an outpatient clinic and a hospital. Russia also targeted power plants and energy infrastructure across multiple regions ahead of winter, causing extensive damage and electricity outages. Ukrainian power utility DTEK reported that three of its power plants halted operations after intense attacks. In response to ongoing strikes, Ukrainian drone attacks targeted Russia as well, wounding two employees at an oil refinery in the city of Yaroslavl and causing infrastructure damage.
Context
These strikes fit into a wider pattern of intensified aerial campaigns targeting civilian infrastructure and energy grids as colder weather approaches. Zaporizhzhia and other affected regions have faced repeated attacks throughout the conflict, putting severe strain on local rescue teams and medical facilities.
