Saudi Coalition Intercepts Drone Over Mecca Region Amid Rising Yemen Conflict
Reported by Neha Sharma (Staff Writer) · The Hindu - International ·
The Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen stated on Tuesday that it intercepted and destroyed a drone in the Mecca region. Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki shared the update on social media without naming where the drone came from. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree denied launching any attacks on Saudi territory on Tuesday, calling the claim a recycled lie.
Casualties And Strikes
The Houthi group reported that Saudi airstrikes killed 17 civilians over two days this week. According to the Houthi health ministry, children made up most of the dead, with officials stating that Saudi aircraft are hitting homes, residential areas, and markets. Mr. Saree stated on Monday evening that Riyadh carried out 109 strikes in the past 24 hours across the Yemeni governorates of Saada, Taiz, Lahj, Al-Jawf, and Hodeidah. The group also claimed drone attacks on Saudi airports in the eastern and southern parts of the kingdom.
Background
Yemen has faced ongoing conflict since 2014 when the Houthis took over the capital city of Sanaa. A Saudi-led coalition joined the fighting a year later to back the government. A 2022 truce broke down in July, and the Houthis took control of areas near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait in September. The United Nations reports that fighting has killed more than 1,600 people and displaced over 300,000 people since hostilities resumed.
Context
Mecca is Islam's holiest city, making any reported security threat in the region a matter of high sensitivity. Saudi Arabia has previously accused the Houthi movement of targeting holy sites like Mecca and Medina, though the Iran-backed fighters consistently reject these accusations. The Bab al-Mandeb Strait remains a vital global shipping route connecting Europe and Asia.
