The Congress has appointed Aradhana Misra as its new Uttar Pradesh unit chief in a major reshuffle with under five months remaining for the state Assembly elections. Misra represents Rampur Khas in Pratapgarh as a three-term MLA and is the child of Rajya Sabha parliamentarian Pramod Tiwari. She brings a family legacy spanning four generations in the party, having started her political journey at the grassroots by serving as a panch in 1998 at age 19 before becoming a block pramukh in 2001.

Team and Priorities

Alongside her appointment, Saharanpur MP Imran Masood has been named working president to support the state unit. Misra stated that her immediate goal is reaching every party member down to the booth level to strengthen the organizational framework. She noted that winning elections is essential for both her party and the Samajwadi Party as they aim to remove the BJP government in 2027.

Alliances and Background

Regarding the expected seat-sharing arrangement, Misra clarified that decisions on constituencies and partnerships will be handled entirely by the central leadership because the national alliance was established at the national level rather than the state level. She previously spent the years between 2019 and 2022 traveling across the state alongside Priyanka Gandhi, which helped her understand party strengths and weaknesses before she later served as the Congress Legislature Party leader.

Context

State party chiefs in major states like Uttar Pradesh face the dual task of managing local coalition dynamics and rebuilding ground-level support networks. Regional alliances often require careful seat negotiations to balance the interests of multiple local leaders and cadres from allied parties.
