Protests and Digital Launch
Opposition leaders, civil society activists, and youth groups continued their demonstrations on Saturday demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged flaws in the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. Amid these ongoing rallies, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi launched a digital platform named 'Satyagraha' to track and connect resistance movements spanning the entire nation. Within nine hours of going live, the portal gathered more than 10,000 responses from groups and individuals engaged in various grassroots battles.
Detentions and Arrest Demands
For the second consecutive day, police in Delhi detained roughly 150 demonstrators marching from Patel Chowk toward Jantar Mantar. Among those taken into custody were Student Association leader Neha Bora, activists Yogendra Yadav and Anjali Bharadwaj, and Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan, while independent Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal joined the march without being detained. Concurrently, the National Students' Union of India staged a separate demonstration near India Gate demanding the arrest of the Chief Election Commissioner.
Congress Leadership Attacks
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge escalated the political confrontation during an address in Kalaburagi by declaring that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and state chief ministers are occupying their offices illegally. He called for the complete dissolution of the Lok Sabha and all state assemblies, advocating for a return to paper ballots for future polls. Party general secretary Jairam Ramesh also condemned the police actions during Friday's protests as barbaric, while Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray expressed support for related demonstrations held in Mumbai.
Context
The ongoing political dispute centers on voter roll revisions and the autonomy of the election oversight body, drawing together various civil society groups and major opposition parties. Such large-scale street mobilizations are a traditional method for Indian political parties to register public dissent against government policies and administrative decisions between major election cycles.
