Salman Khan recently shared that he almost said no to hosting the 2008 television game show Dus Ka Dum when he faced heavy media criticism. Speaking on Bigg Boss Season 20, the actor explained that negative reports filled newspapers and television channels due to court cases, personal relationships, and struggling films.
Father's Advice
When Salman thought about turning down the offer, his father and writer Salim Khan advised him to take it up. Salim asked his son if he trusted his own personality, heart, and upbringing, telling him to simply be himself on screen. Salman followed this advice and hosted the show, which allowed audiences to connect with him as a person rather than just an actor.
Changing Perceptions
According to the actor, viewers briefly forgot popular films like Maine Pyaar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, and Karan Arjun because the game show let people see the real person behind the celebrity. He compared this shift to Amitabh Bachchan gaining a new level of popularity through Kaun Banega Crorepati. After completing two seasons of Dus Ka Dum, Salman went on to host Bigg Boss for 17 seasons.
Context
Television has often served as a powerful medium for major film stars to connect directly with home audiences and rebuild public goodwill after facing controversies. Reality shows and game formats let viewers see celebrities in a daily, conversational setting that contrasts with scripted movie roles.
