Two occupants of a sedan were killed after the vehicle was first hit by a southbound B‑double truck and then struck by another B‑double travelling north on the Newell Highway near Eumungerie, about 35 km north of Dubbo, at around 10 pm yesterday. Emergency crews arrived at the scene and found a man and a woman dead inside the car. Both truck drivers escaped serious injury and were taken to Dubbo Hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing. Police said the highway is now blocked for traffic in both directions from Eumungerie extending to Gilgandra while investigations continue. The closure is expected to last for an extended period. Transport for NSW has advised north‑bound drivers to detour via Collie Road, Trangie‑Collie Road and the Oxley Highway, while south‑bound traffic is being routed through Hargraves Lane, the Oxley Highway, Trangie‑Collie Road and Collie Road. The alternate routes can accommodate B‑double trucks up to 26 metres long and are likely to add roughly an hour to travel times. Police have not released the identities of the victims or the truck drivers and are still examining the circumstances of the crash. ## Context The Newell Highway is a major north‑south link in inland New South Wales, so a shutdown between Eumungerie and Gilgandra can disrupt freight and passenger travel across the region.
