Lucy Liu and Eloise Singer Set Global Tour for Immersive ‘Pirate Queen’ Experience
Reported by Aditya Chauhan (Staff Writer) · Variety ·
Lucy Liu and director Eloise Singer will launch the immersive experience “The Pirate Queen: No Safe Waters” on an international tour next year. ## Tour Announcement The new show expands the original 2024 VR version into a shared‑room format that uses projection, sound and floor‑level movement; audiences stand amid simulated storms, fleets and moving dragons. Liu narrates the piece but does not appear on screen, using her voice to shape atmosphere and guide the audience’s emotional journey. ## Creative Expansion Liu and Singer have co‑written a graphic novel that retells the life of Cheng Shih, the early‑18th‑century Chinese pirate queen, and they are developing a video game based on the same storyworld. Singer says a decade of work on the franchise, including the last three years with Liu, has let the tale live across multiple formats. ## Recognition “No Safe Waters” competed in Cannes Film Festival’s Immersive Competition this year, with Liu producing and narrating alongside Singer. It follows the original “The Pirate Queen” VR experience, which earned an Emmy nomination. Singer was named to the 2026 BAFTA Breakthrough U.K. cohort on Nov. 4, selected in the games category for “No Safe Waters,” a Netflix‑supported initiative that highlights emerging screen talent. She describes the selection as “surreal” and notes growing distribution interest in immersive work. Liu calls the project an extension of cinema that asks viewers to participate differently, stressing the need to tell powerful, overlooked histories. ## Context Immersive storytelling blends film language with physical participation, a trend that is attracting both festival programmers and major talent‑development programs such as BAFTA’s Breakthrough scheme.
